How do Scripts work?

I am curious how scripts work. If I understand it correctly you enter a series of commands and by using scripts you can do that series with one or two clicks. Would this work for say the "orton effect"?

I don't see why not. I would eliminate the "rename this layer----" stuff, though, and just use the straight steps.

yeah I stopped renaming the layers once I got the steps memorized. It works well.

So scripts are pretty much just a way to do a setting a series of steps so I can apply them automatically right?

Yep, that's what scripts do.
