An often overlooked method of manipulating your images is changing layer blends and opacity.

In this simple example, a rocky beach scene has six layers above it -- each with a small image of a starfish on a black background, but each looks different because of a different blend -- indicated by the green labels.

Have you experimented with changes in layer blending and opacity?

I agree that can be a real powerful tool. When working on portraits, I will clone out wrinkels and then drop the opacity of the fixed layer so they have the benefit of looking younger without it being too much.
I have some basic knowledge about layer blending and opacity but never have been tried this effects but after seeing your post I shall try it in this weekend.
