(although I don't understand the difference between HDR and this--??)
Very cool. I will be trying this.
The HDR affect allows you to get details in the shadows and Highlights. If you take a picture of a meadow in the forground a forest in the middle ground and a mountain peak lit by the sun in the background it is pretty tough to get all the shadow and highlight areas exposed properly in one photograph. By taking multiple photos and exposing for each zone in the photograph you can merge them using the HDR function and get details in all areas of the photo. Thus the areas of shadow AND Highlights would hold detail, rather than having to settle for one or the other, or having a blah photograph exposed for the middle ground.

The Orton effect is very similar to the effect you can get with HDR, but that is not what it was originally intended to do.

Did I explain this clearly enough?
Perfectly! Thank you!
Very cool, indeed. I learn something new everyday. I will be using this as well. Thanks for sharing!

Alton, I use Paint Shop Pro v.8 to do my artwork. But this effect can be applied using any of the PSP versions.

That web site was talking of adding a slightly Out of focus to an in-focus image Which is more like Unsharp mask to me. Not the same as extending the range of visible Luminance, As you explained well.
Okay, I'm kind of a noob at PSP, but can somebody tell me where exactly you can find the Blur/Gaussian Blur effect? I am not seeing it anywhere. Thanks!
Never mind, I found it. Sorry!
